From Runway to Runway with Ginger & Smart

Ahead of the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, we caught up with Sydney-based sisters Alexandra and Genevieve Smart, who founded Ginger & Smart in 2002.

We asked them both a couple of key questions about all things fashion, travel and lifestyle. Below are their top tips...

Recently you were part of Australia’s first fashion Runway in the Sky. How was it to create a fashion show at 38,000ft onboard a Virgin Australia flight?

It was wonderful to be part of an Australian first and to have our designs sky high. Although the logistics were a challenge, the passengers by all accounts were surprised and delighted.

It can be difficult when travelling to pack a different outfit for every occasion. What are some of your top tips when it comes to versatile items in your suitcase?

For business travel, the dress is a great versatile style that can be adapted for many occasions just by changing accessories. For holidays – the key is to stick to a colour palette and pack separates that can create multiple looks. Again, accessories can create the illusion that yesterday’s outfit is new all over again.

When travelling, there are some fabrics that travel better in a suitcase than others and are comfortable in all conditions. What are your favourite go-to fabrics to pack and why?

We are very aware when designing our collections that our Ginger & Smart girl travels. In fact, our AKIN By Ginger & Smart collection is designed just for that very part of her day. Sustainable fabrics that travel well (i.e. ones that don't crease) and are easy to wash (often by hand when travelling) are very important. It often comes down to the art of packing your items suitcase: you can either be part of Team Roll or Team Fold. We also recommend making the most of your hotel bathroom to hang your clothes, then turn on the shower and let the steam take care of most creases.

Are there any favourite destinations you love to visit regularly? What keeps you coming back?

London for the edgy street vibe, Paris for the sheer fashion experience, Los Angeles for the hotel scene, New York for the pace and of course Melbourne – for the polar opposite of Sydney.

Given we’re heading into winter in Australia, what current trends are you really into and what will be your winter staple item/s this year?

A sharp jacket pulls every look together. Armour if you like. Styled with a print wrap dress, over the knee boots... And a statement bag.

You’re showcasing at VAMFF this year, which must be exciting. What would you say are the best parts of the festival for lovers of fashion to enjoy?

It's very exciting for us to be presenting our entire collection on the runway at VAMFF. We also love the fact that this is the biggest SEE NOW BUY NOW festival in Australia. That is, you can watch the show, buy immediately and wear tomorrow. The festival also brings fashion lovers and the industry together to celebrate the great talent we have in Australia.
