Hobart

Nestled in the foothills of Mt Wellington, on the shore of the Derwent River, Hobart is Australia’s second-oldest city and southernmost capital.

Built by convict labour, Hobart was originally a penal colony; but has since shaken its dark past to become a city of integrity that mixes the old with the new and showcases culture, activity and history.

The Hobart’s rich colonial heritage, natural charms and laid-back attitude complement the city’s penchant for festivals, urban restaurants and hip bars.

Dining

Tasmania may be small, but the island is a food lovers’ paradise. Four distinct seasons see food specialties abound, with local cheeses, berries, apples, stone fruits, herbs, beef, honey, mushrooms, wines and seafood exported to fine-dining establishments throughout Australia and the world. Hobart showcases Tasmania’s best seasonal produce at number of world-class restaurants, trendy cafes and farm-fresh markets.

Meet the farmers and producers and sample their harvests at Salamanca Market. A weekly outdoor market, held every Saturday at Salamanca Place, the picturesque market brings Hobart’s waterfront alive with the sounds and smells of the region, showcasing the best in local food and produce.

Surrounding the market, the historic sandstone warehouses of Salamanca Place and Salamanca Square are home to Hobart’s cultural hub, with galleries, retailers, restaurants, cafés and bars galore.

The prestigious area of Sandy Bay is another of Hobart’s premier dining districts. An affluent suburb, known as Hobart’s most desirable places to live, the area features exclusive waterfront views, great beaches and a thriving dining precinct.

Make the most of Tasmania with a visit to a specialist delicatessen or grocer – a whole host can be found across Hobart – to taste local specialties like sauces, handmade chocolates, fudge and ice cream, and organic fruits. A visit to a seafood co-op is also a must do, as Tasmania has some of the world’s most sought after oysters, wild trout, Atlantic salmon, octopus lobster, abalone and king crabs.

No trip to Tasmania is complete without taste-testing a local brew, wine or whisky… Hobart is home to notable names like Cascade beer, Meadowbank Estate wines and Lark Whisky Distillery single malt whiskey.

Shopping

Hobart is Tasmania’s shopping city; with a number of local, national and international retailers located in and around the city centre and throughout inner city suburbs.

The main shopping area can be found around Elizabeth Street in the CBD. Stroll down Elizabeth Street Mall to discover a multitude of shopping arcades containing high-street names, national chain stores and one-off boutiques. The city centre is also home to Cat and Fiddle Shopping Arcade on Murray Street – a complex that houses a variety of fashion boutiques, supermarkets, newsagents and specialty stores; and Centrepoint Shopping Centre, also on Murray Street – a large shopping mall with a variety of fashion, gift, specialty and grocery shops.

The seaside suburb of Sandy Bay is known for its fashionable boutiques and designer wear. A variety of shops, ranging from high-end fashion flagship stores to quirky little boutiques can be found on the area’s main drag, Sandy Bay Road.

As Hobart’s premier entertainment hub, Salamanca Place is a must visit for shoppers. Galleries, studios, retailers and boutiques line the streets, side by side with premier restaurants and hip cafes. The area’s weekly markets are an institution in Hobart, attracting thousands of bargain hunters looking for unique fashion, art and craft buys.

North of the city, Glenorchy also has a range of shopping options, while nearby Bellerive, on the eastern side of the river, is home to a number of exceptional shops.
