Experience Kinky Boots in Melbourne

Melbourne is the unofficial culture capital of Australia and whether you’re a local or a visitor you’ll never run out of things to see and do. No matter what time of year it is Melbourne is always bustling with shows, exhibits, festivals and events. Not to mention the food and shopping the city is so famous for.

A visit to the theatre is a must-do in Melbourne and patrons of the city’s arts scene will be able to get their own hit of happiness from October when the heart-warming new musical Kinky Boots struts into town. Based on the film of the same name starring Joel Edgerton and inspired by a true story, the show features Tony, Olivier and Grammy winning songs by pop icon Cyndi Lauper.Kinky Boots is about a young man’s struggle to save the family business and the unexpected friendships he makes along the way. Callum Francis and Toby Francis portray principal characters Lola and Charlie – the fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos and the young man he inspires with an outrageous idea that could change both their destinies. Kinky Boots plays Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne from 12 October 2016.

The best place to stay if you’re in town for the show is the Sofitel.  Located on Collins Street it’s in the heart of the CBD, making it the perfect base for any Melbourne visitors.  Staying at the Sofitel will put you on the prestigious ‘Paris end’ of Collins Street, where you’ll be within walking distance to galleries and gardens, architectural masterpieces and the city’s finest attractions. Once you’ve checked in, a visit the Sofitel’s restaurant, No35, will give you the best views and is the perfect spot to become acquainted with Melbourne’s energetic city centre.

Of course the biggest advantage to staying in the centre of Melbourne is the shopping that’s on offer. Whether you prefer big malls with chain stores, luxury brands with exclusive prices tags or one off boutiques in quirky laneways, the city has it all. Fashion is serious business in Melbourne and if you’re heading out somewhere special like the theatre, a local knows you need to look the part. Wittner shoes are the perfect place to start outfit hunting, because with Kinky Boots it’s all about the shoes! Much like the factory featured in Kinky Boots, Wittner began as a family business dedicated to designing high quality fashion footwear.  Fast forward three generations and the Wittner family are still at the helm. Pop into the Collins Street store next to the Sofitel, or wander further down the street to Wittner in the historic Block Arcade.  Locals and visitors alike will find the perfect shoe to look stylish while surviving Melbourne’s ever-changing weather.

Emporium on Lonsdale Street is a new addition to Melbourne’s shopping scene and already a popular stop for Melbournians to satisfy their two biggest passions, food and fashion. The centre offers the perfect mix of luxury and street style. It won’t be hard to fill a few hours wandering around Emporium, nor will it be hard to find an outfit worthy of a trip to Her Majesty’s Theatre. If you’re the kind of shopper who likes a sales assistant’s opinion though be warned – Melbournians love nothing more then an all-black ensemble! Another insider tip is to visit the Emporium Café Court once you’ve worked up an appetite from shopping. Filled with delights from big names like Jimmy Grants by George Calombaris and dumplings from New Shanghai you’ll see why the city is so famous for food.

To get yourself Kinky Boots ready you can’t miss a visit to MAC Cosmetics. If you’re a die-hard theatre fan you can go full “Lola” with your look or for something more subtle some red lips from their world famous range of lipsticks will go perfectly with your black ensemble — and even more perfectly with the photo you’re bound to take in front of the oversized red boots on display outside Kinky Boots later!

Once you’re ready for a night out at the theatre the best place to enjoy a glass of pre-show bubbles is The Maj Café and Bar at Her Majesty’s Theatre. Cafe by day, sparkling bar by night… all with a special touch of ‘theatrical magic’! If you feel like road testing the drinks selection early the café hours are 7:30am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. Otherwise the bar opens 2 hours prior to every performance Monday – Sunday and trades till late on show nights.

After a day enjoying all that Melbourne has to offer, the icing on the cake is a night at Kinky Boots, the musical Cyndi Lauper calls a “joy pill”. Winner of every major international Best Musical award, Kinky Boots features a book by Broadway royalty Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles), direction and choreography by Tony-Award winner Jerry Mitchell (Legally Blonde, Hairspray), and of course music by Cyndi Lauper. A member of the internationally renowned Australian music ensemble The Ten Tenors, Sydney-based singer, writer and musical theatre performer Toby Francis plays Charlie. Rising British star Callum Francis joined the Australian company directly from the West End stage, where he wowed audiences as the understudy Lola in the UK production, and has appeared in The Lion King, Ghost and Miss Saigon.

Any visitor that sees the show and sites Melbourne has to offer will leave feeling entertained, with a full stomach and of course will be very well dressed! Kinky Boots is a celebration of love, friendship and the power of believing in yourself. Book your Kinky Boots holiday to Melbourne today with Virgin Australia Holidays.
