Adelaide is a quaint city known for its laid-back vibe, superb vineyards and picturesque surrounds. The city is also building a reputation in the sports arena, playing host to popular events like the Santos Tour Down Under and the Clipsal 500 Supercars event each year, as well as being home to two AFL Teams in Port Adelaide and the Adelaide Crows and supporting teams in a variety of national competitions including netball, soccer and basketball.
With its rise to prominence as a hub for sport, it's easy to feel a touch of fitness inspiration yourself when visiting Adelaide. Luckily, keeping fit on your travels is easy with a range of easily accessible activities in the city.
Walk or run the trails around the CBD and River Torrens
There are paths and trails aplenty in and around the CBD, which are flat and well-paved, and offer spectacular views of some of the city’s landmarks. The Adelaide Park Lands Trail is an 18km circuit around the city and North Adelaide and is suitable for joggers and cyclists. The trail can be done in two sections, the southern Adelaide circuit (16.1km) or the North Adelaide circuit (9km). Also suitable for runners and bikers, the River Torrens Linear Park Trail follows 30km of the River Torrens from Athelstone through the CBD and all the way to the western coastline. The trail makes the most of its picturesque river setting with trails on both sides and numerous picnic spots to stop and take in a moment while never feeling like you’re too far from the city.
Bike to the beach
If you’re a keen cyclist, there are plenty of options for making your way to the beach on two wheels. The Linear Park Trail will take you through the Adelaide riverbank precinct before opening up to the popular costal towns of Henley Beach and Glenelg, where you can stop off for a refreshing swim and a coffee refuel before heading back to town. For a more leisurely jaunt home, hop on the historic Glenelg tram, which will deliver you back to the CBD in a timely fashion.
Mountain bike in the Mount Lofty Ranges
Mount Lofty is located in the Adelaide Hills region, approximately 15km from the CBD and caters for a range of experience when it comes to mountain biking trails, offering technical trails for experienced riders, as well as family friendly options. The summit offers spectacular panoramic views of the city and coastal skylines, and riders can stop off at the Summit Restaurant and Café to refuel before descending down the ranges all the way down to the city.
Sweat it out at Victoria Park
Victoria Park on the city’s south-eastern corner is the largest segment of the Adelaide Park Lands and has a variety of free fitness stations on the Sweat Track. Located on the Park Lands Trail, this 1.9km fitness loop has 5 outdoor exercise stations along it, making it easy to keep up your resistance training on the road if you don’t have access to a gym.
