World’s Top Movie Locations

Fans of the books and films converge of the island nation to immerse themselves in faux kingdoms of hobbits, elves, wizards and dwarves.

Boston | USA

Thanks to a long history of organised crime, proud locals like Ben Affleck and Mark Wahlberg, and an incredibly distinguishable accent, Boston has appeared as the setting of countless films. More than 400 movies have been filmed in the Massachusetts capital. 

Famous Boston filming locations include: Fenway Park as seen in Ted, Moneyball and Field of Dreams; Harvard University as seen in Love Story and emulated in The Social Network and Good Will Hunting;  Charlestown  as seen in The Town and The Departed; and Boston Common as seen in The Boondock Saints and The Thomas Crown Affair.

Wellington (and surrounds) | New Zealand

Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy shone a worldwide spotlight on New Zealand. Today  with the added release of the first instalment of The Hobbit  the country’s tourism industry thrives, as fans of the books and films converge of the island nation to immerse themselves in faux kingdoms of hobbits, elves, wizards and dwarves. 

The country’s capital Wellington (or Wellywood as it’s been nicknamed) is a popular starting point for enthusiasts, as the home of Gardens of Isengard, the River Anduin, Rivendell, Osgiliath Wood and Paths of the Dead. Five hours’ drive north, the farming landscape of Matamata hosts the site of The Shire, Hobbiton (pictured). 

Liverpool | UK

Home to buildings regarded amongst the greatest examples of their respective styles in the world, Liverpool is noted for its rich architectural heritage. As a result England’s third largest city has been used time and time again as a film set. 

The city’s famous waterfront was used in The Dark Knight and in Marlon Brando’s On the Waterfront. Its Mersey Tunnels were used in the motorbike chase scene in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes saw Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law walk the various lanes and roads surrounding Liverpool docks. While local sporting field, Bebington Oval doubled as the Olympic Stadium in Chariots of Fire

Rome | Italy 

The romance of Rome has not only wooed lovers, but also film makers. The movie adaptation of Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons defied orders from the Catholic Church to highlight famous landmarks like Saint Peter's Square and Basilica, The Pantheon and Sistine Chapel. 

Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck forever welded vespas into the popular imagination of Rome in 1950’s classic Roman Holiday. Julia Roberts ate her way around sites the Jewish Ghetto, Tiber Island and Campo de’ Fiori square in Eat Pray Love. Matt Damon impersonated Jude Law in the Piazza Navona in The Talented Mr Ripley. And the Trevi Fountain has guest stared in films like La Dolce Vita and Three Coins in the Fountain

New York City | USA

As the most famous city in the world, it’s only appropriate that New York is home to some of the world’s most famous film locations. Brooklyn Bridge appears in Gangs of New York and Deep Impact. Tom Cruise runs through the streets of Times Square in Vanilla Sky. Central Park South is home to the most filmed building in the world, The Plaza Hotel, as seen in films like Bride Wars, Home Alone 2 and Crocodile Dundee

Tiffany & Co on Fifth Ave provided the setting for Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The New York Public Library was used as a filming location for Ghostbusters, Spider-Man and the Sex and The City movie. The Empire State Building featured in King Kong, Sleepless in Seattle and An Affair to Remember. Macy’s in Herald Square featured in holiday favourites Miracle on 34th Street and Elf. While Wall Street was filmed on the Financial District’s Wall Street, which was also the home of the Men In Black headquarters.
